Introduction to Literature and Composition I

Purpose:  An introduction to the UCT English curriculum.  Target students will demonstrate the ability to pursue a college level program based on their ELA scores on the 8th grade MCAS, their reading score on the Stanford 10 Achievement Test, and past performance in English classes prior to entering UCT.

Tech Prep

Introduction to Literature and Composition I

Purpose:  Course material and textbook are the same as in the CP classes.  Target students will either attend a two-year college or enter directly into an occupational area.  The pace of the course and reading assignments from the text are adjusted to accommodate the students.

Introduction to Literature and Composition II

Purpose:  To develop life long learners in reading and writing.  The course examines the broad range of English in writing compositions and essays, reading, and poetry.  The course utilizes the five paragraph essay as a tool for writing and responding to open response writing questions.  The target student has intentions of attending a four-year college.

Purpose:  The course material and textbook are the same as in CP classes.  The target student will attend a two-year college or go directly into an occupational area.

Technical Communication and Literature

Purpose:  To provide students with a course that addresses information on how to write in the business arena.  It also uses American literature as a vehicle to teach vocabulary and writing.  The course targets students who plan to attend four-year colleges and uses strategies that provide students with the academic skills necessary to succeed in college English classes.

Speech Communication and Short Stories

Purpose:  To provide students with a course that develops their ability to communicate.  The course consists of instruction on listening and speaking and develops the student's inter-personal communication skills.  Additionally, the course uses short stories to develop vocabulary and critical thinking skills.  The focus of the course is to develop skills for success in English courses at four-year colleges.

Speech Communication and Short Stories

Purpose:  Course material and textbooks are the same as in CP classes, but the target student will either attend a two-year college or enter an occupational area directly.

 
       
  *Grade 11 and 12 students who have yet to attain an MCAS competency determination will receive MCAS Prep classes instead of regular English classes. *English classes are aligned to the English portion of the curriculum frameworks.  Grade 9 and 10 classes include preparation for MCAS.
