Educational Programs
Upper Cape Tech students benefit from a variety of different educational programs available to them as part of both their technical and academic learning environments. UCT also provides a variety of support services through our Special Education Department and extended learning and training opportunities through our Cooperative Education program with local businesses.

UCT students attend their technical and academic studies on an alternating weekly basis. The designations "A Week" and "B Week" are used to denote which weeks students will be in academic classrooms and which weeks they will be in technical classrooms (shops): Freshmen and Juniors attend academic classes during A week, while Sophomores and Seniors attend academic classes during B week.

CP1: College Preparation
This curriculum offers basic skills in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Incorporated within the curriculum are papers, reports and long term projects. Support is provided as needed. Homework in the College Preparation 1 curriculum is assigned daily to reinforce and master the concepts and skills included in this program. College Preparation 1 courses are designed to prepare students for employment or for two-year colleges and technical schools.
CP2: College Preparation
This curriculum offers advanced course work in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Research papers, reports and long term projects are incorporated into the College Preparation 2 Curriculum. Students participating in the College Preparation 2 Curriculum are encouraged to work independently on all assignments and projects. College Preparation 2 courses prepare students to enter two- and four- year colleges and universities.

English 1 CP1 (1cr)
To provide students with an introductory English course that prepares students in the writing and reading process and provides them the skills necessary for success in future English classes. The class is taught in consonance with the Massachusetts State English Language Arts Frameworks and will prepare the students for the English portion of MCAS. Content is comparable across the various levels and is part 1 of 2.

English CP1 (1cr)
This course is designed to engage students in becoming skilled writers and readers using a variety of venues. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and the subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.
English CP2 (1cr)

This course is designed for students interested in potentially earning college credit. Students will explore both classical and contemporary literature, read poetry, discuss structure, diction, tone, mood, figurative language common themes, etc. AP English is an intensive, fast paced class structured and conducted like a college class.

Purpose: This is a course with an emphasis on the art of problem solving. Students use algebraic methods to explore, model, and describe patterns and functions involving numbers, data, and graphs. The topics of study include real numbers, linear equations and inequalities, laws of exponents, polynomials and factors, quadratic functions, data analysis and statistics. Applications include problems relating to the students’ technical areas and everyday life.

This is an accelerated course designed to prepare students for Calculus and AP Calculus AB. The topics of study include a further examination of functions: linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. The study of functions will include graphs, asymptotes, limits, continuity, symmetry, domain and range, and roots. Use of the graphing calculator is emphasized throughout instruction.

This is an accelerated course with an emphasis on the AP Calculus AB Exam. Students enrolled in this course prepare to take the Advanced Placement AB Calculus Exam and seek college credit and/or placement from institutions of higher learning. Course study includes properties of functions, graphs, limits, differential calculus, integral calculus, and applications. Regular use of a graphing calculator is required in the course work. Successful completion of summer problems and/or special projects may be required.

The class is taught in consonance with the Massachusetts State Science and Engineering Frameworks. This course targets students planning to attend a two-year or four-year college or universities. Students will develop requisite academic skills to do well in college level science courses. This course is available at the College Prep and Honors level.

Physics (1cr)
To provide students with an introductory course on physics and to develop skills in applying the scientific process and engineering process in a hands-on inquiry based environment. This course targets students planning to attend a four year college. Students will develop requisite academic skills to do well in college level courses. This course in intended for students in areas of construction and mechanical technologies, engineering, and informational technology, but is open to all students in any occupational areas as an elective science. This course is available at Honors level.

Marine Biology CP2 (1cr)
To provide students with an introductory course on ocean life from the most primitive to the most complex organisms, with a focus on local biota. This is a survey course open to all students as an elective science. This course targets students who plan to attend a two-year college or enter into an occupational area.
Biochemistry Honors (1cr)
To provide students with an introductory course in organic chemistry and the physiology of the cell while developing skills in applying the scientific process in a hands-on inquiry based environment. This course targets students planning to attend a four-year college, but will benefit students considering two-year colleges, technical schools, the military, or entering the workforce. Students will develop requisite academic skills to do well in college level courses. This course is intended for students in Health and Environmental Technologies, but is open to all students in any occupational area.

In U.S. History students will explore the transformative effects of the Civil War and the emerging role of the
US as world power. They will examine the expanding concept of democracy, and the tumultuous 20th century as American influence expands in industry, world affairs, military conflicts and ideology. The course will
conclude with an examination of the current state of the people of the US in the world. The instructional
activities will develop the student’s critical thinking, writing and reading skills.

Special Education
The Special Education Department at Upper Cape Tech is dedicated to assisting eligible students in the quest to achieve their academic, vocational and social/emotional potential.
The Special Education staff provides services to students using co-teaching and consultation models. Ample supports are offered in content remediation, test preparation, study strategies and executive functioning skills. Regular education and special education teachers work together to provide services in supported English and supported mathematics classes, using a co-teaching model of instructional delivery. In addition, consultation in selected science and social studies classes as well as consultation in the vocational technical programs is offered.
Coordinated academic consultation with parents, regular education colleagues, counseling staff and related service personnel is provided by the student's special education liaison to affect a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to student access to the curriculum. Related services are provided through sub-contracted services to meet students' needs.
